Drunk driver collides with parked police cars

SAN FRANCISCO — If you’re going to drive drunk – which you shouldn’t – at least make sure you’re not doing so immediately in front of a police station.

That was the hard lesson learned Sunday night by an inebriated man who allegedly drove his car out of the North Beach Garage on Vallejo Street and immediately ran into three – yes, three – police cars, all parked in front of the Central Police Station, according to a San Francisco Police Department dispatcher.

The driver apparently pulled out of the North Beach Garage and was travelling “at a high rate of speed” west on Vallejo, when he “bounced off” one patrol car, careened across the street and hit the second head on, and then pushed that into a third car. The vehicle finally came to a stop when it hit a tree in front of the station, the dispatcher reported.

One of the three patrol cars was totaled, the other two were damaged, and the tree, “one of the most beautiful” on the street, according to the dispatcher, was destroyed.

The man, who the dispatcher did not identify, was found to have a blood alcohol three times the allowable rate and was arrested.
