City’s voting equipment not ready for use

SAN FRANCISCO – The new electronic voting machine equipment that San Francisco plans to use in November has not yet been approved for use, and will have its mandatory public hearing Sept. 26 — less than six weeks before the election.

Nicole Winger, spokeswoman for the secretary of state, said The City’s voting machine vendor, Sequoia Voting Systems, “only completed their application for this system approval a couple of weeks ago.”

Testing of the equipment is currently ongoing and the hearing is one of the final steps, she said.

Last November, certification problems with San Francisco’s previous vendor resulted in The City having to manually handle the majority of ballots which delayed full voting results for weeks.

A phone call to Sequoia was not immediately returned.
