SAN FRANCISCO — A plan by Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin to keep chain stores out of Chinatown will be heard before the board next week, after breezing through the Land Use and Economic Development Committee. If approved, the proposal would make Chinatown the third neighborhood in The City to outright ban formula retail — defined as any business with 11 or more stores in the country.

Yet more Big Brother activity by the Board of Supes - ostensibly to "preserve the character" (massive overcrowding, filthy streets, rat-ridden tenement apartment buildings, shops selling identical, shoddy merchandise to gullible tourists, dead animals inhumanely hung in butcher shop windows)of the neighborhood. In reality, it's just another ploy by Peskin's to consolidate the district as his own personal fiefdom; a la Ed Jew, only his political contributors and pals can do business in Chinatown.

When my grandmother emigrated from China and lived in Chinatown from the 1950s up to her death in 1990, she liked McDonalds burgers and Baskin Robbins ice cream when both chains has locations on Grant Avenue as well as walking to shop at the Safeway at 145 Jackson St. The best way to assimilate into America within a few blocks of her low-income apartment while still keep with her culture. Some chains also contributed to charitable causes within Chinatown and keeping their store exteriors clean as well. It is a pity to see that "blending" of cultures be gone because of a few NIMBYs ill-equipped to handle some business competition.

The hanging cooked ducks are a tradition in Chinatown. It lets the fat drip off and seals the duck meat juices inside while producing a crispy outer skin. Slow Food Nation would approve.

The Chinese BDSM community must be up in arms about this. Peskin's about to learn the truth of that old adage "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but whips and chains excite me"

I guess all the banks and other retail establishments need to pack up and leave, eh? I pretty much agreed with the Owellianguy up until the point where he was talking about inhumanely hung up meat. The animals are dead. They are food. What's inhuman about that? If you have a problem with the chinatown butchers or the chain stores, VOTE WITH YOUR DOLLARS AND GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. If someone wants to clean up the dirty areas of SF in the pursuit of making a few bucks, I say let them.
