California attorney general urges court to void Prop. 8

California Attorney General Jerry Brown has changed his position with respect to the state’s new same-sex marriage ban and is now urging the state Supreme Court to void Proposition 8.

Brown filed a brief Friday saying the measure, which amended the California Constitution to limit marriage to a man and a woman, is itself unconstitutional because it deprives gay couples of a fundamental right.

After California voters passed Proposition 8 on Nov. 4, Brown initially said he would fight to uphold the ballot initiative in his role as attorney general, even though he personally voted against it.

He submitted his brief in one of the three legal challenges to Proposition 8 brought by same-sex marriage supporters.

Now that religious groups have shown how much money they can spend on political measures to pressure the public to agree to their views of morality, they should begin to pay property taxes on their religious property. They don't like separation of church and state, so let them pay taxes like everyone else! No more exemptions! Our society needs that income more than ever now. Also, let us compromise. Let them marry who they want within the confines of their religion, and let the state designate that right to all citizens. Let their hate and bigotry and discrimination be kept to themselves! Any injustice anywhere affects justice everywhere. Martin Luther King said something like that.
