A 20-foot privately owned vessel overturned in rough surf shortly after noon, according to reports from the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office. Personnel with the Pillar Point harbormaster responded, rescuing one fully conscious person and pulling three unconscious passengers from the water. All four were transported to local hospitals, where two were pronounced dead, sheriff’s Sgt. Ray Lunny said.
The identities of the two deceased passengers, both men, were being withheld until officials could notify their families.
Investigators did not know what caused the incident, Lunny said.
However, rough seas Sunday afternoon led the National Weather Service to issue a surf advisory that was still in effect at the time of the accident, meteorologist Charles Bell said.
“The wave heights were around 11 feet, which makes for dangerous boating conditions,” Bell said.
