Bill to ban gun shows at the Cow Palace moves forward

Staff, wire report
July 6, 2009

Empty chamber: State Sen. Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, is trying to ban gun shows from the Cow Palace in an effort to “take each and every one of these guns off our streets.” (Examiner file photo)

A bill that would prohibit gun shows at the state-owned Cow Palace passed the Assembly Public Safety Committee on Tuesday, after narrowly garnering the necessary votes last month in the state Senate.

The Cow Palace is a concert and entertainment center that lies on the southern border of San Francisco and the northern border of Daly City.

Senate Bill 585, authored by state Sen. Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, would prohibit gun shows, which are exhibits with hundreds of tables providing a variety of guns.

In January and September, the venue held gun shows hosted by Utah-based Crossroads of the West.

When Leno introduced the bill in April, he said that instead of encouraging gun dealers to set up shop, “we should be doing whatever we can to take each and every one of these guns off our streets.”

The bill is nearly identical to legislation Leno introduced as an assemblyman in 2007, which passed the Assembly but not the Senate, according to his office.

SB 585 will be heard next in the Assembly Appropriations Committee. If it passes that committee it would then be eligible for a vote before the full Assembly, according to Leno’s office.

In these days of fiscal meltdown, it makes you proud to know that the legislature still has time to take up the really important issues.

If I have a constitutional right to own a gun don't I have a right to be able to legally buy a gun?

Another stupid, misguided attempt by lib dumocrats to deny some folks their constitutional right. Like closing a gun show is going to prevent criminals from getting weapons. Voters, get rid of these fools!

I'm beginning to think San Francisco is a city where the inmates are running the asylum. California is on the knife edge of bankruptcy and yet these idiots continue to fiddle. They have no clue yet they want more and more control.

This will cost the state 38 million dollars a year. This figure does not count the fees that the Cow Palace collects for parking. Even if one assumes that the Cow Palace is going to be sold to raise money for the state, Any buyer will take that lost income into account in arriving at a sales price. At a time when Kaliforniya is searching around for money, it makes no sense to sell off an asset that generates that kind of cash flow. Even though the ban is phased in over five years, there is no waiting list of users wanting to get into the Cow Palace, so that 38 mil. is going to be gone, gone, gone. Talk about shooting oneself in the foot. Instead of writing to this page, write to your idiot legislator and tell him or her what you think of their lack of competency.

In the last season of NYPD-Blue, Dennis Franz’s character Sipowicz stayed late in the office to confound the Sergeant’s parrot that had been squawking aimlessly during the week. He planted a tape player W/ an endless loop W/ a mild expletive that he and the crew would label male lowlife’s that in earlier years would be reserved for degrading women. He next day, Sipowicz removed the tape player just in time before the Sergeant arrived for the shift. Much to the Sergeant’s dismay, his parrot learned the expletives very well, and wouldn’t cease his constant chatter. I reserve these mild expletives –– abbreviated for such male politicians: DOU****E-BAG(S)!, DOU****E-BAG(S)!, DOU****E-BAG(S)!...

So gun show are banned, now they just pushed the crowd underground, left with no choice but to sell their items in back streets and under the table. Good job stupid politicians, Marxist fools. You will see this will not decrease crime, but increase it. Stupid dumb turd eating politicians. May the fleas of a thousand camels infest your armpits.
