A bill that would prohibit gun shows at the state-owned Cow Palace passed the Assembly Public Safety Committee on Tuesday, after narrowly garnering the necessary votes last month in the state Senate.
The Cow Palace is a concert and entertainment center that lies on the southern border of San Francisco and the northern border of Daly City.
Senate Bill 585, authored by state Sen. Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, would prohibit gun shows, which are exhibits with hundreds of tables providing a variety of guns.
In January and September, the venue held gun shows hosted by Utah-based Crossroads of the West.
When Leno introduced the bill in April, he said that instead of encouraging gun dealers to set up shop, “we should be doing whatever we can to take each and every one of these guns off our streets.”
The bill is nearly identical to legislation Leno introduced as an assemblyman in 2007, which passed the Assembly but not the Senate, according to his office.
SB 585 will be heard next in the Assembly Appropriations Committee. If it passes that committee it would then be eligible for a vote before the full Assembly, according to Leno’s office.
