Back from his honeymoon, Newsom returns to work

SAN FRANCISCO – Sporting a gleaming new wedding ring, a well-rested Mayor Gavin Newsom strolled through North Beach on Saturday afternoon in his first public appearance in The City since his honeymoon in Africa.

The mayor, who recently wed actress Jennifer Siebel on her family’s sprawling ranch in Montana, appeared to be getting back into the swing of his political responsibilities following a long-overdue vacation.

And it was not an African safari or the sweeping vistas that the mayor mentioned about his trip.

“Sleeping and breakfast,” he said. “Those were my two favorite activities.”

Now that the honeymoon is over, Newsom has little time for more shut-eye.

His North Beach appearance was in support of Joe Alioto Jr.’s candidacy for the Board of Supervisors District 3 seat.

Next, he jets off to Denver to host a free indie-rock concert Monday as part of the Democratic National Convention. The event, which features appearances by top-tier bands including Nada Surf, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard, is said to be the mayor’s reach for the young-adult vote as he considers a run for governor in 2010.

And Newsom apparently would like to see the Death Cab for Cutie singer-songwriter best — or at least that’s what one of his representatives said.

“Really, is that my answer?” Newsom joked. “He’s my spokesperson, literally and now figuratively as well.”

Newsom also took time to praise Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama for selecting Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., as his vice presidential running mate. He called Biden an “extraordinary mind” who will give Obama the foreign-policy experience that is necessary to govern in an “unsteady world.”

“I was surprised that people were surprised about [the decision],” Newsom said. “It makes absolute sense.”

Alioto Jr., the brother of District 2 Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier, is a supervisorial candidate for District 3 after current representative Aaron Peskin terms out.
