Examiner deal offers advertisers a wider audience

Staff report
November 12, 2009

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Examiner is now offering its advertisers the option of reaching a wider Bay Area audience of more than 800,000 daily readers, according to Clarity Media Group, the newspaper’s parent company.

The Examiner recently joined the San Francisco Bay Area Buy advertising group. It allows clients to purchase an ad that will run in 14 newspapers spanning six regional counties as well as their Web sites.

Clarity Media described the group in a statement as a “one-stop advertising buy for clients.” The ad rates are cheaper, and the group’s combined circulation largely surpasses that of the San Francisco Chronicle, which recently announced a 25 percent drop in circulation from last year.

The Examiner’s daily print edition is circulated throughout The City and San Mateo County. By joining the ad group, clients can also advertise to newspaper readers in San Jose and Marin, Contra Costa and Alameda counties, Clarity Media said in a statement.

Besides The Examiner, newspapers participating in the venture are owned by MediaNews Group. They include the San Jose Mercury News, Oakland Tribune and Contra Costa Times.

“The San Francisco Examiner makes the SFBAB’s geographic coverage complete,” Mark Wurzer, chief marketing officer of Clarity Media Group, said in the statement.

Clarity also said the partnership’s Internet reach is “dominant.”

Along with newspaper-operated Web sites, clients will have the option to run advertising on the community journalism site Examiner.com, also a subsidiary of Clarity Media.

Examiner.com — a network that operates separately from sfexaminer.com — has more than 9.2 million unique visitors monthly, the company said. The Nielson Co. recently identified Examiner.com as the fastest growing Web site in the nation.

Clarity Media Group is the owner of The San Francisco Examiner, The Washington (D.C.) Examiner, The Weekly Standard magazine and Examiner.com.
