Jill Dearman, the author of “Bang the Keys: Four Steps to a Lifelong Writing Practice” will host a book signing and mini workshop at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Red Hill Books, 401 Cortland Ave., in Bernal Heights. She teaches “The Art of Editing: From Copy Editing to Top Editing” in the journalism department at New York University.

What’s the book about? The book is about the practice of writing. I address eternal principles that every writer has to deal with. I’ve been a writer since I was a kid and I love it. I believe that writers need to share with other writers, so that’s what this book is about. I am putting all my knowledge about writing into a book.

What’s the overall goal and purpose of this book?

To help writers stop torturing themselves. This book is meant to calm writers down and guide them.

Why do you love to write?

Writing allows me to tap into my imagination and into who I really am. It’s the most natural thing in the world. It makes me feel incredibly alive.

Do you have any advice for new writers?

Being able to approach something completely new and with no disappointments behind you is a wonderful thing. Enjoy it and don’t overthink it.

What do you think is a cure for “writer’s block”?

When feeling down about your writing life, help another writer. Terrible moods are the curse of all writers, and helping someone out is extremely satisfying.
