The accounting major will be coming from Massachusetts to compete in the 14th annual Bay Area Classic yo-yo contest. Finals are Saturday at the north side of Washington Square Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
How long have you been a yo-yo player? I’ve been a yo-yo player for about 12 years since I was in elementary school. Everyone played with yo-yos during recess. Luckily for me there was a store close by to me that sold yo-yos and a yo-yo school that had lessons three days a week. There were instructors for teaching tricks and incentives for getting them.
What does the contest involve? It is broken down into five divisions for different styles. There is a preliminary round that you do a routine to music for one minute with one yo-yo. The top 15 or so go through to the next round and do a three-minute routine to music. There are usually three to four judges.
What else does a yo-yo contest involve? It’s great going to huge events so you can share your tricks with others, and I have friends from California so it will be like a reunion.
