What does the store sell? We have kitschy novelty items. We’ve got a huge selection of greeting cards, some of which are pretty edgy. We have some interesting books, we have some great local artists, a lot of San Francisco stuff, a lot of pride stuff. We have a good sense of humor.

How did it start? We were started by a group of friends in 1990 who could see that there was a major gay men’s health crisis. So they decided to have a Christmas store for six weeks to raise funds for other groups. It was so successful that somebody had the bright idea to stay open year-round.

How much money does the store raise? We got clobbered by the economy the last couple of years, so it’s probably only going to be about $20,000 this year. But we’ve had years when it’s been $250,000.

How did you end up there? I came here in our first full year as a volunteer because it was started by some friends of mine. It’s a labor of love.
