A woman's car lost power, which included power for the brakes. Her ricocheted off parked pickup trucks on opposite sides of Broadway Street and ended up inside the entryway of an apartment building.

SAN FRANCISCO — A motorist at the top of a steep hill lost control of her sedan and ricocheted off parked pickup trucks on opposite sides of Broadway Street this afternoon before slamming through the entrance of an apartment building.

The woman, who police say was in her mid to late 40s, had reversed out of a parking space and straightened out to drive down a steep, dead-end section of the street around 3:20 p.m. when she lost power and the ability to brake, according to Sgt. Carl Tennenbaum of Central Police Station.

The woman told police she was able to direct her silver Toyota Avalon into the apartment building at the southeast corner of Broadway and Taylor streets, according to Tennenbaum.

“She did a good job of avoiding any further damage,” he said.

Both white pickup trucks collided with other vehicles in a “domino effect,” according to Tennenbaum.

Six cars were damaged, including the sedan and both pickups.

Upstairs residents said they raced out to the balcony when they heard the sound of slamming cars and watched as the saga unfolded. They said the woman immediately got out of the car and was able to walk away from the wreck.
