Ten years ago, when the first building at the UC San Francisco Medical Center in Mission Bay opened, the area was largely undeveloped. Now the neighborhood has become a hub for biotech science.

State and local officials gathered at Genentech Hall in Mission Bay — the first building to open on the campus — to celebrate how far the medical center has come and the buildings, including a new children’s hospital, that are planned to open in the next few years.

On Wednesday, UCSF Chancellor Susan Desmond-Hellmann shared a stage with Mayor Ed Lee, Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, former Gov. Gray Davis and former Chancellor Michael Bishop to fete the campus.

“UCSF Mission Bay was not borne out of a specific vision,” said Bishop, who was the chancellor at the time the campus opened. “It was borne out of necessity.” He added that the college had run out of room at its Parnassus facility and worked with The City to find a new location.

The medical center has become a magnet for research and biotech companies.

Officials also touted the future of the area, including the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital that is scheduled to open in 2015.
