Mayoral staffers asked the employees of the Bayview Mission food bank to move all the attendees waiting for their weekly handouts to a side street as not to be in the way during Mayor Ed Lee's State of the City address.

The operator of a Bayview district food bank will ask Mayor Ed Lee for an apology after his State of the City address interrupted the weekly Monday morning giveaway.

Deacon Nina Pickerrell runs the Bayview Mission food bank on Jerrold Avenue near Third Street. It gives away food at 10 a.m. Mondays.

This week, Pickerrell says she was approached by mayoral staffers about 8:45 a.m. to inform her that Lee was en route for his speech. She says they asked her to move the crowd of food bank attendees so as not to interfere with Lee’s arrival at College Track, a nonprofit on the corner of Jerrold Avenue and Third Street where Lee was to give his speech at 10 a.m.

So the line of “about 300” people was hustled off Third Street and onto Jerrold Avenue to clear the entrance for dignitaries, and the food bank opened at 9:30 a.m. instead of the usual 10 a.m. in an effort to clear the crowd before Lee’s address began.

Pickerrell says she and her volunteers “tried to accommodate the mayor’s visit,” but were turned off by the short notice and “chaos” of police and staffers trying to shoo 300 food bank attendees away at the last-minute.

“The [mayor’s people] didn’t know the neighborhood,” she said. “Once again, people come into Bayview, do their peace, and then leave. That’s the unfortunate thing.”

Christine Falvey, a spokeswoman for the mayor, said she had heard of no issues with the food bank, and noted that the seniors receiving their food “seemed to go smoothly.”
