Warren Slocum defeated Shelly Masur for the District 4 seat on the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors.

Warren Slocum, the retired county registrar of voters, beat veteran Redwood City School Board member Shelly Masur for the open District 4 seat on the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday night.

It was a race in which countywide name recognition loomed large. Although each supervisor represents only one geographic area, San Mateo is unique among California voting jurisdictions in that the entire county has a say on each seat.

That formula for winning could be less of a factor in the future with Tuesday’s passage of Measure B, which will limit supervisorial voting to each district. The measure was aggressively opposed by local U.S. Reps. Anna Eshoo and Jackie Speier, who both said county government was operating effectively under the current system.
