Christina Olague, who was appointed by Mayor Ed Lee, faced criticism in the left-leaning district for being too cozy with Lee and moderate backers such as former Mayor Willie Brown. The more moderate Breed, executive director of the African American Art and Culture Complex, was the other top fundraiser in the field and played up her roots, having grown up in the neighborhood.
Progressive candidate Julian Davis suffered a setback over sexual harassment allegations that prompted progressive backers to rally behind Olague. The incumbent garnered left-leaning support after casting a key vote to reinstate Ross Mirkarimi as sheriff, after Lee’s effort to oust him from office.
