Everyone will turn their clocks back one hour on Sunday at 2 a.m. for the end of daylight saving time.

With that extra hour of sleep Sunday, public safety officials are urging Bay Area residents to check smoke detectors and change batteries on the devices.

While changing clocks, fire officials suggest changing the battery on all smoke detectors to keep up with fire safety at home.

Fire officials from the San Jose Fire Department said that although Sunday provides a good time for an annual battery change, residents should be testing smoke alarms monthly.

Fire officials emphasized that a working smoke alarm helps make sure families have the best chance of survival if a fire breaks out.
