Incumbent Eric Mar was apparently re-elected to his post as District 1 supervisor following a heated battle with the more moderate David Lee.

The owner of a State Farm insurance office, Lee amassed a large war chest and benefited from record-setting independent expenditures from moderate interests such as the San Francisco Alliance For Jobs and Sustainable Growth. But in the end, the progressive Mar, perhaps best-known for his ban on Happy Meal toys to curb childhood obesity, proved too popular to unseat.
Lee had accused Mar of neglecting the Richmond neighborhood, including allowing empty storefronts to proliferate along commercial corridors. The race grew tense with accusations of misleading campaigning from both sides. Mar gained the support of groups such as the San Francisco Democratic Party and the San Francisco Labor Council, while Lee secured endorsements from the police and fire unions and U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein.
