A Wells Fargo executive on vacation with his family in Hawaii died Wednesday while snorkeling, according to the company and police on the Big Island.

Paul S. Tsang, 49, of San Francisco, was pulled from the waters off the Mauna Lani Beach Club early Wednesday afternoon, police said. He died a short time later.

Tsang was a senior vice president at Wells Fargo, heading the bank’s strategic auto investment branch since November 2001, according to an online profile.

“We offer his family our deepest condolences,” said Ruben Pulido, a spokesman for Wells Fargo. “He will be greatly missed.”

Police Lt. Gary Souther in Hawaii said Thursday that authorities believe Tsang may have suffered some kind of medical emergency while in the water. Autopsy results are still pending.

Tsang, who was to turn 50 on Saturday, had been vacationing on the island with his family, Souther said.

According to police, someone on the shore spotted Tsang floating in the water about 12:35 p.m., and an Ogden, Utah, man who went to check on him on a paddle board found him unresponsive.

Tsang was brought to shore, where a nurse from Tucson, Ariz., and lifeguards performed CPR on him.
Tsang was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead about 1:40 p.m., police said.
