Multiple lanes, one-way directions and access to heavily used commuter freeways can turn the streets of South of Market from residential roads to miniature interstates. But a speed limit reduction could curb that soon.

Officials have imposed a 5 mph cut — from 30 to 25 mph — on parts of Howard, Folsom, Harrison and Bryant streets.
Mayor Ed Lee said in a statement that the reduction was based on his directive to improve pedestrian safety.

Supervisor Jane Kim, whose district includes South of Market, and Elizabeth Stampe of pedestrian safety organization Walk SF lauded the move.
