Search abandoned for man missing in Bay

The Coast Guard has called off the water search for a 27-year-old man they believe fell into the Bay late Monday night.

The man, whose name has not been released, was last seen around 10:30 p.m. when he and a friend were returning from AT&T Park after watching the Giants play, according Coast Guard Officer Mark Leahy.

Police said the two intoxicated men were standing by Pier 32 when the man’s friend turned away. When he turned back around about a minute later, his companion was gone. He suspected the man fell into the water, although he did not see it happen, Leahy said.

Police, fire and Coast Guard personnel searched around the pier throughout the night without success. Coast Guard helicopters circled the area and four divers searched beneath the pier. They called off their search around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

“We exhausted all of our efforts and we exhausted the search area,” Leahy said. “We searched for almost 12 hours and decided to suspend our efforts until we find more evidence.”
