The 2012 lineup for the fifth Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival is yet another whimsically diverse bill: Stevie Wonder, Metallica, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Foo Fighters, Jack White and Beck share headlining spots in the Aug. 10-12 festival in Golden Gate Park.
More than 60 artists are slated to appear. While specific schedules for each day will be announced in coming months, three-day and VIP tickets go on sale online at noon Thursday.
Genre-wise, Outside Lands has every base covered.
Clubbing fiends have Justice, Washed Out, YACHT, Skrillex, Passion Pit, Geographer, Die Antwoord and Santigold to bounce to. Sigur Ros and Explosions in the Sky provide post-rock dreams and atmospheric escapades.
Down-and-dirty rockers have The Kills, Thee Oh Sees, White Denim and Alabama Shakes. Quieter types will appreciate Andrew Bird for his delicate, chamber-gypsy pop orchestrations, as well as Yellow Ostrich, Grandaddy, The Dodos and Of Monsters and Men.
Elements of this year’s edition of the traditionally indie-heavy festival seem like a mid-2000s flashback: Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, The Walkmen and Regina Spektor — all releasing new albums this year — also are on the roster.
Despite gossip across the blogosphere about the group breaking up, the London-based Bloc Party is recording in Manhattan, N.Y., and has signed a deal for a fourth studio album with American art-rock label Frenchkiss Records, home to Les Savy Fav, The Hold Steady, The Drums and Passion Pit.
New-wave revivalists Franz Ferdinand have booked a heavy tour schedule in 2012, with Outside Lands being a pit stop for the Scots, who are playing in Europe, North America and Asia this summer.
“Heaven,” The Walkmen’s seventh studio album, has a June 5 release date; the band is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Bold and warbling songstress Spektor’s “What We Saw from the Cheap Seats” comes out May 29.
