Suspicious package at Muni bus stop prompts street closure

The discovery of a suspicious package in San Francisco's Presidio Heights neighborhood on Thursday afternoon prompted the evacuation of the nearby Jewish Community Center of San Francisco, police said.

The Police Department's bomb squad responded to investigate the package, which was found around 2:30 p.m. at a bus shelter at California Street and Presidio Avenue, police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said.

The bus shelter is on the northwest corner of the intersection, and out of an abundance of caution, the community center -- which is located across the street at 3200 California St. -- was evacuated, center spokesman Nathaniel Bergson-Michelson said.

The evacuation was lifted after police gave the all-clear around 4:15 p.m., Bergson-Michelson said.

Muni's 2-Clement, 3-Jackson and 43-Masonic lines rerouted during the police activity, Muni officials said.
