A kindergartner was injured when she was hit by a car while walking to a Nob Hill school Tuesday morning, police said.

The 5-year-old was struck by a sport utility vehicle on Frank Norris Alley near Redding Elementary School, police said. She was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, but her injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Police said they had not cited the driver, a woman in her 40s, but the accident remains under investigation.

School district spokeswoman Heidi Anderson confirmed that the girl is a kindergartner at Redding.

Elizabeth Stampe, director of the pedestrian advocacy group Walk SF, said the accident served as a reminder that drivers need to be more careful, especially near schools. The City recently reduced the speed limit to 15 mph at dozens of schools, and Stampe said advocates were working to increase low-speed zones and improve enforcement.

“When you’re driving, you’re basically piloting a weapon,” she said. “People lose sight of that. We need to make it clear to drivers that there is a penalty for endangering pedestrians.”
