More rain is coming to the Bay Area this week, but the storm system is expected to be short-lived, the National Weather Service said Sunday.

Periods of rain are expected in The City on Monday night, turning into more-steady showers Tuesday before clearing out, forecaster Austin Cross said.

“We definitely need it, but unfortunately it looks like it’s probably going to be dry for a while,” Cross said. The next chance for precipitation is next weekend, he said.

San Francisco will see between a quarter-inch and one-third of an inch of rain this week, with more precipitation at higher elevations, such as in the Sierra Nevada.

“They should get some snow, probably not superimpressive though,” Cross said.

This week’s storm system is mirroring others this winter that have been splitting before they hit the West Coast and delivering more rain to the Pacific Northwest and south of the Bay Area, Cross said.

Average temperatures in The City will be in the mid-60s today, then chillier Tuesday with highs around 55, the weather service said. The rest of the week is expected to be in the low to mid-60s.

“It’s a little bit warmer than average,” Cross said. “The normal is about 60 degrees.”
