Board of Supervisors President David Chiu announced new committee assignments Tuesday, one of the duties of the board leader at the start of each year.
Committee positions are important for board members. They determine which issues the supervisors will work on, and how significant a role they will play in the political fabric of San Francisco.
Chiu’s committee assignments are politically not much different from those he announced in 2011, when he installed more moderate supervisors to powerful committee positions, angering the progressive faction on the board that criticized Chiu, once its ally, of selling out.
Supervisor Carmen Chu, a moderate, will continue to serve as budget chair, a position she has held since last year. The Land Use Committee remains the same.
The newest member of the board, Christina Olague, who was appointed by the mayor on Monday, will serve on the Public Safety, City Operations and school committees.
“I hope that these committee assignments really do reflect the diversity of perspectives on this Board of Supervisors,” Chiu said.
