The American Conservatory Theater plans to hop on the Mid-Market revival bandwagon with a new storefront-style studio space, set for a showcase on Wednesday.
ACT has been pursuing buildings for a primary campus in the area, but the leased studio space will serve as a primer, according to theater officials.
“It’s about establishing our presence in the Mid-Market area and laying our claim,” said ACT spokesman Evren Odcikin, adding that the new studio will be used for performances by student actors. “We’re still looking at various spaces in the area.”
Mayor Ed Lee is scheduled to give his blessing to the new studio, which is at the corner of Market and Seventh streets, on Wednesday evening during an open-house event. Lee has made revitalizing the troubled neighborhood one of his administration’s top priorities.
