A man who died after being struck by a San Francisco Municipal Railway bus in The City’s South of Market neighborhood on Sunday has been identified by the Medical Examiner’s Office as 71-year-old Manuel Tomaneng.

Tomaneng was struck by an outbound 14-Mission bus at Fifth and Mission streets at about 12:20 p.m. Sunday, Muni spokesman Paul Rose said.

The bus was just pulling away from a stop when Tomaneng apparently crossed the street in front of it, Rose said.

He was taken to a hospital where he died of his injuries later that day.

San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency director Ed Reiskin said in a statement that the agency is offering its “deepest sympathy” to the family and friends of Tomaneng.

The bus driver has been placed on nondriving status as the crash is investigated, and will be tested for drugs and alcohol, as is standard Muni procedure.
