The man who ran into a burning building on Haight Street last month to warn some 30-residents of the dangerous fire, will be honored for his actions next week.

Pierre Pegeron, owner of Lo-Cost Meat Market at the intersection of Haight and Fillmore streets, acted quickly when he saw flames spewing from the top floor of a three-story structure across the street on the night of Sept. 27.

Pegeron said he and a man hired by the building’s management to paint the interior ran from the first to the third floor, knocking on doors all the way, to get anyone and everyone inside out safely.

He will be honored by the Board of Supervisors Tuesday.

Pegeron said he helped at least six people out of the burning building and pulled the fire alarm to alert more.

The fire, which quickly turned in to a four-alarm blaze, burned for more than an hour before the San Francisco Fire Department could extinguish it. No one was injured – possibly in part to Pegeron’s actions – but the cause of the fire, which caused $2.15 million in damage, is still under investigation.

The building is still closed to occupants, including businesses such as Walgreens, Three Twins Organic Ice Cream and Estelle’s Fresh Sandwiches. There is no estimated time for the building to reopen.

Fourteen residents were displaced. Last week, a fundraiser held by the Lower Haight neighbors raised more than $7,000 for victims.
