A fire in a single-room occupancy unit in the Bayview neighborhood displaced 23 people Saturday afternoon.

The fire broke out at about 3 p.m. Saturday at 5122 Third St., between Revere and Shafter avenues, in a room on the top floor of the three-story building, according to Assistant Fire Chief Dave Franklin.

The blaze shut down Muni service on Third Street for about an hour, while firefighters extinguished the fire, he said.

The Shiloh Full Gospel Church occupies the first floor of the building and SRO units fill the second two floors.

The unit where the fire started was destroyed by the blaze, but no injuries were reported, Franklin said. He did not provide a cost estimate of the damage.

Red Cross is assisting the 23 people displaced by the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
