At least one case of the salmonella found in ground turkey nationwide has been reported in San Francisco, according to health officials.
Six cases have now been recorded in the state, including one fatality in Sacramento County, according to the California Department of Public Health. There was a second, nonfatal case in Sacramento, as well as Los Angeles, Riverside and San Diego. But the strain of the bacteria is resistant to most antibiotics, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
However, no meat has been recalled.
The CDC declined to specify where the ground turkey was purchased, only saying at least three retail locations are involved.
A total of 77 people have reported being poisoned by salmonella in 26 states since March 1, according to the CDC. More than half those infected reported using fresh or ground turkey products.
The numbers, though, don’t make it a high enough risk for a nationwide outbreak. Instead, the CDC recommended consumers cook ground turkey thoroughly.
Those affected range in age from less than 1 to 88 years old. Among the 58 cases with available information, 22 victims have been hospitalized, the CDC reported.
People sickened by salmonella typically develop diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps within 12 to 72 hours of becoming infected. The illness usually lasts four to seven days, and most people recover without needing treatment.
More than 40,000 cases of the disease are reported each year in the United States.
