A Muni bus struck and killed a woman walking in a crosswalk Friday afternoon in San Francisco’s Castro District.

The woman was walking in the intersection of 18th and Hartford streets, near Castro Street, at 2:30 p.m. when the Muni bus that was making a left turn struck her, according to San Francisco police Sgt. Michael Andraychack.

The woman had crossed the street about 95 percent of the way when she was hit and pinned underneath the bus, officials said.

Crews arrived at the scene shortly after and extricated the woman from underneath the bus, but she was pronounced dead at 2:45 p.m., San Francisco Fire Department spokeswoman Mindy Talmdage said.

Hours after the accident, a black purse, a cellphone wrapped in a pink case were still lying underneath the bus. A few feet away a pair of yellow-and-black spotted sunglasses sat.

The bus that hit the woman, who police said was between 25 and 30 years old, had been taken out of service on another line and was on its way to be used as a shuttle bus for the F-Market streetcar line, Andraychack said. Muni had reported high ridership on the historic streetcars and was bringing in buses to shuttle passengers, police said.

There were no passengers aboard the bus as it made its way toward the 17th and Market streets F-Market stop, Andraychack said. Police and residents of the area said the street was not a usual Muni route.

The Muni driver is cooperating with the investigation and will be tested for drugs and alcohol as per San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency protocol.

The incident closed streets in the area and disrupted the 33-Stanyon Muni bus line, police said. The SFPD said the intersection was reopened at 5:45 p.m., and Muni said bus service was restored just after 6:30 p.m.
