A head-on collision on the Golden Gate Bridge shut down the span for nearly an hour Sunday evening, causing a traffic nightmare, but occupants walked away with minor injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash, which occurred midspan around 8:10 p.m., involved four vehicles, including a Kia, a Mercedes sedan and an SUV, according to CHP Officer Ralph Caggiano. Information on the fourth vehicle was not available as of press time.
The cause of the crash is unknown, but Caggiano said it appears one vehicle crossed over into oncoming traffic. He did not know which way the vehicle was headed. It is not known if alcohol was a factor in the crash.
One vehicle also ended up on its side, Caggiano said. One person was taken to Kaiser Permanente in Terra Linda with minor injuries.

The crash was cleared from the bridge just before 9:10 p.m.
The crash is one of dozens that highlight a controversial issue that has hounded Golden Gate Bridge transit district officials for decades: the absence of a median barrier on the span.
Currently, vehicles heading north and south are separated by 19-inch yellow rubber tubes. They are placed on the roadway every 25 feet each day and are moved to accommodate flow during commute hours. At the time of Sunday’s crash, three lanes were open to traffic in both directions.
