The dead body of a man was found Saturday morning near a drainage pipe at Fort Funston Park, according to the U.S. Park Service.

A person walking a dog on the beach discovered the body in the surf under 1 to 2 feet of water at about 7:20 a.m. U.S. Park authorities and San Francisco police responded and brought the body above the surf line, according to Alexandra Picavet, a spokeswoman for the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

The man had been wearing dark jeans and boots, and the body was taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office, Picavet said. The drainage pipe is surrounded by a concrete structure covered in graffiti and that appears to be a nighttime hangout.

San Francisco police said the investigation is under federal jurisdiction because the body was found on park land. The park is one of the Bay Area’s most popular dog-walking spots, and has high cliffs with areas for hang gliders to launch.

Twitter and Craigslist messages posted two hours after the body was discovered said someone had left camera equipment in the Fort Funston parking lot. It was not known if the equipment was related to the body.

The discovery follows another dead body found in the woods of Fort Mason in March.
