Weather might have been a factor in a hit-and-run in the mid-Market Street area Saturday that caused the third pedestrian fatality in a week.

A man was found lying in the crosswalk near Eighth and Market streets around 9:20 p.m. Saturday. His body had wounds indicative of being struck by a vehicle, police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said.

As of Sunday evening, police were still gathering information about the incident, despite it having occurred at a busy intersection in front of the Orpheum Theatre.  

The death was the latest in a string of pedestrian fatalities.

On March 14, Aurora Venida, 87, of San Francisco was struck by a car at Geary and Arguello boulevards. She died Wednesday.

Then on Friday morning near AT&T Park, 71-year-old Lourdes Richman of San Francisco was struck and killed by a truck driver turning left through the crosswalk. The driver has not been arrested, and initial reports indicate he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Esparza said rain might have contributed to the two most recent accidents.
