A surfer was pulled from the water near the famous Maverick's surfing break Wednesday, firefighters said, and online reports indicated he had drowned.

The drowning victim was Hawaiian big-wave surfer Sion Milosky, according to Twitter posts from Surfing Life magazine and ESPN Surf.

Firefighters were called out at approximately 6:53 p.m. on a report of a drowning at Maverick's, said Jamie Norton, a battalion chief for the coastside fire protection district.

"We found a surfer who had been pulled to the beach," Norton said.

CPR was in progress when firefighters arrived, and the victim was taken to Seton Coastside Hospital.

Norton could not confirm that the surfer died, and attempts to reach the San Mateo County Coroner's Office were unsuccessful.
