Bay Area residents continued to feel winter’s wrath Wednesday, as pea-size hail was reported in San Francisco and Oakland, according to the National Weather Service.

With the chance of light hail falling again today, residents should expect heavier rains tonight. And people looking to capitalize on the Presidents Day holiday weekend will have to navigate a 60 percent chance of showers through Monday, National Weather Service forecaster Steve Anderson said.

Southbound traffic on The City’s Great Highway was closed due to the accumulation of water from the rain, said Norman Yee of the Police Department’s Taraval station. The roadway between Lincoln Way and Sloat Boulevard was closed due to water not draining off the southbound lane. 

Although there have been no local reports of flooding, forecasters urge precaution as the classic winter storm from the Gulf of Alaska continues to drench The City.

Drivers are advised to drive slowly through possible freeway puddles to prevent hydroplaning.

“As I like to say, ‘Don’t be a clown, slow down,’” Anderson said. 

If puddles look deeper on roadways that are less traffic intensive, drivers are advised to find an alternative route.

“Turn around, don’t drown,” Anderson said. 

Also, the 15 to 25 mph gusts prompted high-wind advisories to both the Golden Gate and Bay bridges, according to the California Highway Patrol Traffic Incident Information log.

With a winter storm warning issued for the Lake Tahoe area, residents saw 7 to 14 inches of snow at lake level and 12 to 22 inches at 7,000 feet. Lake Tahoe expects three more inches of snow through the rest of today, Anderson said, although forecasts for the upcoming holiday weekend are yet to be available.
