Assistant Chief of Operations Jeff Godown will be interim chief of the San Francisco Police Department until a permanent replacement is found, according to a department spokesman.

On Sunday, Chief George Gascon was selected as district attorney, 18 months after he took over the top position in the police department.

Lt. Troy Dangerfield confirmed Godown would be interim chief until a chief was appointed by the police commission and confirmed by the mayor, a process that could take months to complete.

Dangerfield said, though, the changes at the top are important the department is still operating normally.

“It’s still business as usual for us,” he said. “The real policing is done on the streets with the officers, that hasn’t changed.”
