The shooting of a 9-year-old boy in the stomach in San Francisco’s Western Addition neighborhood on Saturday has been determined to be accidental, although details of the event are still unclear, a police spokesman said. The shooting was reported around noon Saturday in the 1100 block of Turk Street, San Francisco police Officer Albie Esparza said.

Officers arrived to find the 9-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound to his lower abdomen, Esparza said.

The boy was taken to San Francisco General Hospital to be treated for his injuries, and is expected to survive, Esparza said.

Investigators do not yet know how the boy was shot, but have concluded “it wasn’t a targeted event,” Esparza said.

San Francisco Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, whose district encompasses the location of the shooting, said during Tuesday’s board meeting that the boy found the gun and accidentally shot himself, but Esparza said that remains under investigation.

“We’re still trying to ascertain if he did accidentally shoot himself, if it was in fact self-inflicted or someone in the area who had the gun and discharged it,” he said.
