Lewis is odd man out in Giants’ outfield

Trending Articles

With their bullpen taxed during the weekend series in San Diego, the Giants have called upon a fresh harm. Right-hander Scott Atchison was recalled from Triple-A Fresno by the Giants, who sent outfielder Fred Lewis back down to the Grizzlies.

Atchison was 3-2 with a 2.01 ERA in 38 games for Fresno, including four saves. The 31-year-old struck out 51 batters in 53²/³ innings pitched, allowing 44 hits and walking just eight. Before pitching the eighth for the Giants, Atchison had pitched four innings for San Francisco this year and was 2-3 with a 3.70 ERA in his major-league career.

Lewis was hitting .275 with three home runs (including two grand slams) and 17 RBIs in 51 games for the Giants. Recently, he was used frequently as a late-inning defensive replacement for Barry Bonds. That role is likely to be filled by Rajai Davis, who was acquired last week from Pittsburgh for Matt Morris.

NOT BOTHERED: Giants manager Bruce Bochy said before the game that the intense media scrutiny surrounding Bonds’ pursuit of Hank Aaron’s all-time home run record has not become an annoyance for the players. San Francisco had won eight of its 13 games since Bonds reached 753 before losing three one-run games in San Diego over the weekend.

“It really hasn’t affected us. If anything I think the guys have enjoyed it,” Bochy said. “I thinkthey’re enjoying watching history being made.”
