While Primus followers will rejoice knowing that Les Claypool and chums will, indeed, be celebrating their 20th Anniversary New Year’s Eve concerts next week at Oakland’s Fox Theater, there’s a darker, less celebratory aspect to the affair that the bandleader is almost uncomfortable mentioning. But it’s worth a quick reminder, especially in this season of warm-hearted giving.
This July, Claypool’s kid brother Ron and his wife gave birth to what they believed to be a healthy baby boy named Matthew. But on Sept. 22, their son was emergency-airlifted to Stanford Medical Center, where he was diagnosed with ALL — acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Claypool posted this earnest request on his website. With a minimum treatment period of at least three years, the family’s medical expenses are already skyrocketing. So they’ve set up a site where Primus fans — or just kind people, in general — can donate to this extremely personal cause.
Ron has also launched his own hydroponics business in Monterey, Green Gopher Garden Supply, so you can show long-term support at that site, too www.greengopheronline.com. Especially in this day and age, one serious illness can completely bankrupt a family in no time flat. So even if you can’t make it to one of the Primus gigs next week, you can help Claypool in a roundabout fashion by donating to Matthew’s cause.
