Two elderly pedestrians were seriously injured New Year’s Day when a truck slammed into a vehicle in the Richmond District and also injured the family of five passengers sitting in the car, according to fire officials.
The collision happened around 3:44 p.m. at Geary Boulevard and 21st Avenue, the San Francisco Fire Department said on Twitter. The incident appears to have occurred near the crosswalk outside the Chase Bank.
One of the elderly pedestrians suffered life-threatening injuries while the other elderly pedestrian sustained serious injuries. Both were taken to the hospital.
The victims in the car range in age from pre-teen to adult, according to SFFD.
The San Francisco Police Department is on scene.
The pedestrians were injured on the first day of the new year. San Francisco has a goal of reducing traffic fatalities to zero under the Vision Zero program. Last year between January and November, 12 people died while walking in The City.
