For 10 years, San Francisco’s Om Records founder Chris Smith has wanted to create a new label geared toward live musical acts. He’s finally doing it.

Today at Monarch in The City, Smith celebrates the launch of his new Lavish Habits imprint, an Om subsidiary. Bay Area “crunkadelic” rock band Maus Haus and San Francisco-based electronic music producer Blackbird Blackbird headline; DJs Solar and Davi also are on the bill.
Maus Haus, a popular live band — with no guitars — is a dance-pop troupe playing a mix of poppy melodies using primarily vintage synthesizers.
Blackbird Blackbird’s music has been called everything from psychedelic- to synth-pop. The producer is known for making “pretty,” piano-heavy music.
Focusing on “the intersection of live music and electronic music with kind of an indie edge,” Smith says he wants to keep the label small. He only plans on signing four or five acts to ensure the label works closely with each one.
In addition to Maus Haus and Blackbird Blackbird, the label also is home to Brooklyn, N.Y., synth-pop quartet Body Language. The group, which has toured with Theophilus London, Neon Indian and Toro Y Moi, is popular for fun and energetic live performances.
Smith doesn’t claim to have a grand scheme for the imprint.
“The music is really unique and it speaks for itself,” he says.
His plans for the live aspect of the music include art-driven set designs and elaborate visual components for the acts on tour.
While Om Records is known primarily as a dance-music label associated with big-name house producers such as Mark Farina and Miguel Migs, its catalog, with diverse artists including People Under the Stairs, Greenskeepers and Bassnectar, spans the gamut.
“We do all kinds of different music,” Smith says.
