Academy of Art University baseball relief pitcher CJ Romero passed away in his sleep on June 5, and a memorial will be held in his honor on Thursday, June 14 at his alma mater, Archbishop Mitty, in San Jose, Art U announced on Tuesday.
Romero, who had just completed his first year as a Music Production and Sound Design for Visual Media major at the Academy, made 14 appearances for the Urban Knights this season, throwing 13 innings. He passed away in his sleep. No cause of has been released.
“CJ had a profound effect on our program in his short time with us,” head coach Dan McDermott said in a statement. “He was always happy, upbeat, and loyal to his friends. We will miss him greatly and send our condolences to his family.”
A 2014 graduate of Archbishop Mitty, Romero initially attended Ohlone College where he played baseball for two years, before transferring to the Academy of Art.
