OAKLAND — The Golden State Warriors spent a significant portion of the 2016-17 regular season pointing out issues in the NBA’s scheduling practices. If their goal was to inspire change, they were successful.
In an effort to reduce the number of back-to-back games, the league shifted the season earlier — going from eight preseason games to four, and limiting the length of training camp.
Having less time together before the season shouldn’t be a problem for the on-the-floor product, according to Kevin Durant and head coach Steve Kerr.
The only thing that is crucial for them to overcome this week is the jetlag they’re still processing after a week-long trip to China. It was so bad on Tuesday that Kerr had to scuttle plans to scrimmage after assistant Ron Adams pointed out that “The guys are walking around like zombies.”
They should be fine by Tuesday, when the Warriors launch their title defense against the Houston Rockets at Oracle Arena. But, there is one victim of the new schedule: Klay Thompson.
Thompson said he doesn’t like watching preseason basketball, because he knows how most of the league plays and will have plenty of time to catch up during the regular season.
“I haven’t been watching much basketball. It’s the best part of the year for baseball, as well as college football,” Thompson reasoned.
And this year, the Dubs’ final preseason game couldn’t have come at a worse time with Thompson’s Washington State Cougars in the Bay Area to play Cal on Friday.
“I want to give my fans a show, but my Cougars only come to town like once a year,” he said. “So, this is the first year I’m missing it and it sucks. But it’s just bad timing.”
A natural pitchman
As he does — usually unintentionally — Thompson took the internet by storm when his shoe brand Anta released a promotional video that featured him in a bathtub full of sneakers.
Was it awkward?
“Nope,” he said. “I was right in my element”
