Kelly Slater surfs under the curl at the Rip Curl Pro Search surf contest en route to winning the third round

Pro surfer Kelly Slater won his 11th world title Wednesday during a surfing event at San Francisco’s Ocean Beach.

Slater, 39, clinched the Association of Surfing Profession World Title during the second day of the event. He beat out Australian surfer Dan Ross in a heat to advance out of the third round of the contest.

“It’s very fulfilling and there’s personal satisfaction,” Slater told the ASP tour after the win. “It feels real nice. I’ve dedicated my life to surfing and competing and to go a whole year and win a world title and have it pay off, it’s really fulfilling.”

The ASP tour stop in San Francisco this year kicked of Tuesday during a warm spell in San Francisco that included a slight offshore breeze and two- to four-foot waves.

The first day of the event included one surfer leaving in the middle of a heat after he said he saw a shark in the water. That report was unconfirmed and the contest resumed.

The win for Slater also came on the one-year anniversary of the death of pro surfer Andy Irons, who was himself an ASP champion.

“What are the chances of me winning on the anniversary of Andy passing away?” Slater said to the Tour. “It makes it a lot more special for me. It’s a way to celebrate my memories with him and be thinking about him.”

The contest is scheduled to continue for a few more days in San Francisco.
