Through three games, Blaine Gabbert has appeared as he has for most of his career: Not quite a starting quarterback in the NFL.
The San Francisco 49ers has a signal caller on its roster who has led them to the Super Bowl and has a much higher ceiling than Gabbert, a former first-round pick.
But, he isn’t ready, head coach Chip Kelly said on Monday.
“He had a serious layoff in times in terms of being able to medical rehab. To get the full Kap for what you need, the potential that he has, he needs to continue to just work on the physical aspect of things,” Kelly said as Kaepernick put in extra work on a side field at the team’s facility.
“Kap is our number two right now and everybody wants to know why Kap isn’t our number one. I don’t think Kap is 100-percent right now,” Kelly later explained.
Kaepernick was one of the only 49er not to see the field on Sunday.
But Kelly did leave the door open for Kaepernick getting playing time if the team continues to struggle moving the ball.
“Well, we’ll just see how we go offensively,” he said. “I mean, if we score 65 touchdowns next week, then I don’t see him getting a shot.”
Anthony Davis retires again
Offensive tackle Anthony Davis abruptly retired before the 2015 season.
Three games into the 2016 campaign, Davis informed the team that he is retiring again.
Davis had yet to play this year after the coaches asked him to change position and he suffered a concussion.
Marcel Reece cut
The Oakland Raiders released fan favorite Marcel Reece on Monday. He was deemed eligible to return from his suspension for banned substances earlier in the day.
“What he has meant to the organization and to me over the past few years is hard to put into words, but his actions, both on and off the field, speak louder than any words can,” Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie said to Raiders.com. “This was a tough decision. Not enough can be said about Marcel’s commitment to his teammates and his pride in the Raiders, and we wish him and his family nothing but the best.”
Reece had been in the Silver and Black since 2010.
