A senior military official is confirming that NATO forces in June will launch a major offensive in the Afghanistan city of Kandahar.
The official said the goal was to rid the southern city of Taliban forces before the Muslim holy month of Ramadan begins in August. The official was not authorized to speak publicly on the operation and discussed the operation on condition of anonymity.
Kandahar is considered the spiritual heartland of the Taliban and a stubborn holdout of insurgent fighters. The southern city was the seat of government for the Taliban when it ruled Afghanistan prior to the U.S. led invasion of the country in 2001.
