Judy Juanita details ‘DeFacto Feminism’ in ‘Essays Straight Outta Oakland’

East Bay writer, teacher, poet, playwright, historian and standup comedian Judy Juanita visits the San Francisco Public Library this week to talk about her new book “DeFacto Feminism: Essays Straight Outta Oakland.”

The author (whose acclaimed 2013 semi-autobiographical debut novel “Virgin Soul” is a Bay Area-set coming-of-age story about a young black woman who joins the Black Panther Party) again tackles personal and political issues in her new collection of essays, poems, graphics and literary criticism.

Among the pieces in the book: “Acknowledge Me,” a ghost story in which a dead playwright, once her teacher, pushes her to succeed; “Whatever Happened to Carolyn M. Rodgers?” which pays tribute to a poet who became a phantom of the Black Arts Movement; “Report from the Front,” a description of how America’s most liberal city still channels racism; “Cleaning Other People’s Houses,” which addresses the value of physical labor; and, in the wake of Trayvon Martin, “The Gun as Ultimate Performance Poem,” which examines the gun’s power and role in the African American community from the Panthers to present-day.

Juanita appears at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3 in the African American Center of the San Francisco Public Library, 100 Larkin St., as part of the library’s “We Love Diverse Books” program.
