Burn is the director of Cupertino’s Homestead High School band, which will perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. The parade will be broadcast on KNTV (Ch. 3) on Thanksgiving Day.
How long have you been teaching band? Twenty-two years at Homestead. I was a student and drum major here in the ’80s.
What was your introduction to music? In the fourth grade, my dad encouraged me to be in band. He asked me to pick between the trumpet and the cello. I chose the trumpet, but he was steering me in that direction; he was a jazz lover.
How did Homestead get picked? We submitted a pack of information, including film footage. We’re the only school from the West Coast performing. Once we were picked, we needed to fundraise, but we have dedicated parents and students.
What will the performance entail? It’s a three-mile parade from Central Park West down to Herald Square. The band performs the entire time, and when we arrive at Herald Square we have 85 seconds to perform in front of NBC’s cameras. We’ll do an “Ode to Joy” arrangement by John Meehan.
